I am looking for a food science job, but when I send my resume into a job listing onto job sites, I feel like it goes into a black hole. I don’t even know if they received my resume. What do I do now?
You are not alone; this happens all the time. Chances are the company did receive your resume, but they did not respond to you for one reason or another. Sending your resume into a job website should be your last resort in finding a position. Your resume is now in a pile of resumes that may or may not be reviewed. If you are a student, find out if any food companies are interviewing on campus. Go to as many interviews as you can even if it is not your first choice. It’s good practice, and you’ll learn something. You can also try a different approach. The best way to find a job, whether you are a student or 20 years out of school, is through personal networking. People hire people who they know or if someone they know recommends them. For example, if you want to work for XYZ company, ask yourself if you know anyone who works there. Ask your professors, friends, associates, even family members if they know anyone there as well. If it is a local company, perhaps someone from XYZ attends the IFT or other local functions? Go to those meetings and introduce yourself. If you can, make connections with people who either know people at this company or are currently working there. It doesn’t matter what their job title is, they might be able to help you. Ask them about the culture of the company, the backgrounds of the people who work there, especially those who are in the position you want. Ask what they think might help you get hired. This is all very useful information for you. It takes effort, but it is worth it. Send your resume to the hiring manager, with an introduction from whomever you had contacted, if they will provide such. This way you will have a much better chance at getting an interview. 302
